Life at the Bottom of the Totem Pole

Life at the Bottom of the Totem Pole Upbeat Monday, Career Girls! This is my first post in 2013 so it just feels normal to talk about our New Years Resolutions, however I believe were all inclination somewhat unpleasant that we pledged to get up right on time for the rec center and leave behind all assortments of desserts So this post is going to concentrate on another severe thought: the irrational conviction that our first employment will be our fantasy work. All through your teenagers, you're under a huge amount of strain to make sense of what you need to do and who you need to be for a mind-blowing remainder. At that point you at last make sense of it, move on from a respectable college and start looking for that fantasy work that you know is simply staying there hanging tight for you. Better believe it right. For reasons unknown, we naturally expect that our first huge individual occupation will be the best thing since Simba and Nala began to look all starry eyed at in The Lion King. Us Gen-Y ers are truly certain individuals, as we ought to be. Were awesome. But once in a while our certainty persuades were over the snort work that typically accompanies an passage level position. While our cerebrums are incredibly savvy, we as a whole will wind up doing the accompanying at any rate once: Running with a plate of espresso in heels on a cobblestone road in February day off Destroying your manager mystery legally binding notes Endeavoring to fix the copier until your whole arms and face are shrouded in ink Ordering all the 465462132158 business cards your supervisor has ever gathered Gathering folios featuring all customer work for as far back as year Filtering and sending. Examining and sending. Filtering and sending. These little minutes are the point at which we need to cuss our school teachers who persuaded our vocations would be great. These little minutes are the point at which we need to cuss those couple of companions who really found an astounding activity after graduation. These little minutes are the point at which we have to suck it up and swallow the little pride we have left. Everybody needed to begin some place and that some place was in all likelihood the base. We are somewhat more fortunate however, envision what snort work resembled without innovation?! I swear the terrible assignments don't keep going forever (and on the off chance that they do, you may have a more concerning issue). You'll gain proficiency with a ton about existence and yourself during those horrendous minutes and the before you know it, you'll be sitting in a corner office with great perspectives on the city. Alright well not so much, however you'll unquestionably be doing significantly increasingly genuine work and significantly less b!tch work! Have any useful tidbits or guidance for those beginning at the base of the command hierarchy? It would be ideal if you share underneath â€" Career Girls can never offer an excess of help!

QA with Craig Tashjy, CFO at Cingulate Therapeutics - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Viewpoint careers advice blog

QA with Craig Tashjy, CFO at Cingulate Therapeutics - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Craig Tashjy, Cingulate Therapeutics Life science startups are increasingly important, with non-traditional investors such as Google becoming significant providers of venture capital. In this episode, I talk to Craig Tashjy, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and co-founder of one such startup, Cingulate Therapeutics in the USA. Since its launch in 2012, Cingulate Therapeutics has been developing two drugs for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In addition to managing the company’s finances, Craig administers its human resource and employee benefit programmes, and he offers great insights into the startup employment experience. What was the inspiration behind your startup company? We believe our endeavour will be a success for millions of people around the world For me it was very personal. I have ADHD and a son who has it as well. So I know from experience about the unmet need for an effective treatment for ADHD that lasts right through the entire day. As for the rest of our team, almost everyone involved is either engaged in the treatment of ADHD (along with other CNS issues) or has a personal connection to it. So the subject is near and dear to us and that’s where the passion and inspiration come from. What makes you confident it will be a success? There are several reasons. Primarily, we know our active ingredients work, because they’ve been clinically proven over many decades. We also know the delivery system works because it’s been commercially proven in other therapeutic categories. We have a great development partner, a solid regulatory approach, patents and strategic partnerships in place. We believe we will achieve success on multiple levels â€" but most importantly, we believe our endeavour will be a success for millions of people around the world (approximately 50 million in the US alone) living with ADHD. How easy was it to secure funding? Not very! No matter how good your idea or proposal, raising money is never easy, especially when you’re doing it in a private capacity. Fortunately, we’ve been able to ‘partner financially’ with a terrific collection of individual investors who came to know our story and saw the strong potential of our developmental plan. That being said, until we divest one or both of our ADHD assets or fully commercialise, we will be seeking the right funding partners. How did you find the skills you needed when you were starting out? You dont have to be a big pharma company to gain access to great expertise in certain areas We were fortunate when starting out, that we, as founders, were able to wear many hats and didn’t mind doing so in order to move things forward. This approach greatly reduced our startup costs and allowed the vast majority of our resources to be directed at our development plan. As well, in specific areas where our own skill levels are thin, we look to bring in consultants. We’ve been able to form some high level relationships in this manner. That’s the beauty of the life sciences â€" there are so many tremendously talented people out there. You don’t have to be a ‘big pharma’ company to gain access to great expertise in certain areas. How different is it working for startups than working in ‘big pharma’? Although I’ve not worked in the pharmaceutical industry prior to Cingulate Therapeutics, I have spent many years in corporate settings. Building a startup takes a different sort of mindset and enjoying it requires a different type of personality. There is no big corporate umbrella overhead â€" which can be both good and bad. It can be more daunting but certainly more exciting. Where does the excitement come from? Having worked on the corporate side for many years, I can tell you its a whole new ball game As a startup, the excitement comes from many places. For example, we see a relatively short runway between obtaining data and the next big milestones. Things happen fast and move quickly. Having worked on the corporate side for many years, I can tell you it’s a whole new ball game. When you work for big corporates, you typically don’t come to work every day thinking ‘in thirty or sixty days this could all change’, whereas that’s how it is for us. We have regular conversations with folks out there â€" pharma, venture, etc. â€" who have a keen interest in what we’re doing. It’s exciting because it’s a different atmosphere, a different tonality. Gymtimidation is real and 50% of Americans suffer from it

Gymtimidation is genuine and half of Americans experience the ill effects of it Gymtimidation is genuine and half of Americans experience the ill effects of it I've been needing to utilize the paddling machine at my exercise center for quite a long time. Be that as it may, I won't, on the grounds that they're situated legitimately before the wild treadmill warriors in impeccable exercise rigging, and I would prefer not to look ungainly or frail while they gaze me down. So I stay with the ellipticals, toward the side of the exercise center that has a sense of security. That is the very meaning of gymtimidation â€" the dread of turning out to be before others.A review of 2,000 Americans supported by Isopure and directed by OnePoll and gave an account of Studyfinds discovered that that half of individuals experience gymtimidation, which clearly takes on numerous structures. Work Halloween costumes, how they affect your corporate career

Work Halloween costumes, how they affect your corporate career Work Halloween Costumes Work Halloween Costumes Every year, around this time, I have a little more fun than usual with the blog and try to predict who is going to cut their career short by showing up in an inappropriate work Halloween costume. For me it is a way to have a bit of fun, and at the same time, open the kimono just a bit so and give you the reader that HR / manager insight that won’t be publicly acknowledged until it is too late.   This year is no different and I am excited to see what creative work Halloween costumes will show up.  If you have ever thought that there is no way your VP will notice you, than October 31st is your opportunity.   Average Joe busts out I have seen many average Joe’s bust out of obscurity in the corporate world. They were able to do this because they came up with an ingenious costume which got them noticed by upper management. The ingenious work Halloween costume got Bobby No Name noticed by a higher up, which turned into a few hello’s in the hallway. With a little luck and reputation for good work an idea was not just pitched but listened to with an open mind and mentorship. It wasn’t Bobby No Names Excel or presentations skills, it was his imagination with his work Halloween costume that got him noticed. Of course, I have also seen a number of Billy Bob’s commit career suicide by coming in with a work Halloween costume that may have been ingenious, but completely inappropriate for the corporate culture. Execs are left shaking their heads, direct managers are embarrassed, and co-workers are left whispering in the bathroom. If only these dumb-asses spent this much effort thinking about an idea that would help the business.   Guilty Pleasure Work Halloween Costumes are one my guilty HR pleasures.  Up there with interviewing an eager young co-ed, delivering a pink slip to the office bully, and my personal favorite: reporting a 20% lower yearly salary than the actual on a punk-ass employee when asked for a reference check.   These are all things I obviously won’t admit to publicly, but behind a mask and dark glasses, I will be the first to say, I am only human. As an HR Professional, I won’t publicly admit that I care for the crude and tasteless work Halloween costumes. Deep down, I enjoy walking around the building and seeing the employees and all of their company spirit  (I mean freak shows  ) while taking mental notes. I repost this particular blog every year around Halloween, and every year I change it up a bit.  I cant help myself when it comes to sharing this because it’s so much fun to predict what celebrity or meme will inspire an inappropriate work Halloween costume and what employee will commit the CLM (Career Limiting Move in HR speak).   Three things never change in the workplace Getting drunk at the company holiday party and getting drunk and rolling a golf cart at the annual company golf tournament are two. Of course the inappropriate Halloween costumes.   In the same way that Santa is busiest on Christmas Eve, HR is usually busiest on 2 special days during the year the day after the company holiday party and Halloween.   If a company doesn’t have a people problem every once-in-awhile, I am out of a job.  Thank you, Baby Jesus, for the dumb-asses and their work Halloween costumes.     Don’t get me wrong, I am all for team building, and work Halloween costumes build teams very effectively.  The great part is that teams don’t even realize they are bonding and that is Nasty at its best.   Love team costumes I love it when a department dresses up in a theme because it shows they banded together, agreed on a single mission and worked as a group towards a common goal, and if that isnt HR speak, I dont know what is!  It can be as simple as the Men in Black theme or as elaborate as the crew from the Starship Enterprise (usually technical departments).   This year, a couple of team-building themes a department could dress up come to mind very quickly and with facial hair so popular this year: Completely acceptable for the workplace   Duck Dynasty in various forms of difficulty:   Just leave the firearms at home Pimps and Hos I struggle internally when a department comes dressed as “Pimps and Hos”. At least they still banded together like a team on a single mission.   I don’t have kids (and won’t admit this publicly), but it is pretty cool seeing the little crumb snatchers come to work with their parents work in their little kitty costumes. Parents and children in a matching theme are the best. Curious George with the Yellow hatted Cowboy comes to mind. This is a hip VP of BizDev I had the fortune of working with.   Pushing the envelope but hilarious but I gotta give the nod! 2013 CLM Costume list Call me the Grinch who stole Halloween, but to me, this simple gesture is an HR tell.  When parents bring the little kiddies to work, it is a subconscious sign that the parents like their job.   If they hated the place, they would treat the office like the home of a sexual offender.   Chemical weapon victim (Completely inappropriate. I wouldn’t be posting this but I am confident some jackass will try to pull it off) Miley Cyrus (the most recent version) Chris Brown and a bruised Rihanna There is always the employee that needs to push the envelope when it comes to inappropriate office Halloween costume. Unless it is Elvira sporting cleavage with a short skirt and fishnets, I am probably not going to be amused. Elvira might be able to get some work done. Unfortunately, the productivity of the folks around her will be like her costume, minimal. Its not grubby day For those considering coming to work in your grubbiest, most unprofessional clothing, this is probably not a good idea.   This is Halloween not “Casual Day” and even Casual Day is not Grubbies Day.   This is the worst form of costume abuse in my opinion. Office Halloween costumes come in all shapes and forms.   In the same way, drunk behavior can be a reflection of your true self, (mean drunks and friendly drunks) HR will interpret your costume as a direct reflection of how much respect one has for their customers and co-workers. It is also a reflection of how much professional awareness you possess.   It’s all about judgment. For me, it will be lights out and extra Beware of Dog signs posted in the front yard this Halloween evening.  Anything to avoid the crumb snatchers.     See you at the after party, HRNasty nasty: an unreal maneuver of incredible technique, something that is ridiculously good, tricky and manipulative but with a result that can’t help but be admired, a phrase used to describe someone who is good at something. “He has a nasty forkball.
